Poverty Description

Exploration Name: Poverty
Exploration Dates: February 9- April 1
Essential Questions:
a) What are the main factors that cause Cambodians in poor and What will be the new vision to improve poverty situation in Cambodia.
Number of Students: 13

In Poverty class we did many things like researching about other countries that are below the poverty line. Poverty means poor, and poverty is divided into two parts. The first is relative poverty, which means having problems with income, for example they don’t have enough money. The second is absolute poverty, which means they don’t have what they need, for example, no house, no food and so on. Things that I learned are: families are poor because they don’t have a big goal. We went to Kampong Chhnang to learn what a money saving group looks like. We also went to a waterfall in Kampong Chhnang. In this Exploration we went to two ministries to learn about families that are poor in Cambodia.

Here is my reflection that I wrote when I went to Kampong Chhnan …

Interviewing the family in the community: On 11/3/15 we went to Kompong Chhnang province and visited one community. We went there to ask questions about their family. My group had four members: Sovannou, Lux, Samady and I, and we interviewed two families. I learned a lot from the man that we interviewed. He had a wife but his wife divorced him and his mother is dead. After his wife was gone his family didn’t have anything to do. Then he joined the money saving group and after that he became the director of the money saving group. Other than the money saving group, he has another job to make money and put it into the money saving group.

Visiting Stupa: On 11/3/15 at the afternoon when we finished our interview we went to the stupa. We went there to listen to the history of Derichan village. What I learned are: the Khmer King named this Derichan village because the villagers in that village killed a provincial chief that was controlled by the French. The villagers not only killed French people, they also killed Khmer translators. So that is why they put the name Derichan Village, but now they do not call it Derichan village anymore, they call it Krenglive village. We call Derichan village just for a year and then they changed it to Krenglive village. I was so happy to learn this history because I live near that village and I still didn’t know the history in this village. (Derichan village means brutal village)

Presentation from CPR: On 12, March, 15 at the afternoon we went to CPR. We went there to listen to their presentation and they told us a lot about people. The big goal of CPR is, they want Khmer people that have AIDS and the people that don’t have AIDS to work together. For example, to make money saving group. They work with a lot of places in Cambodia and they have a big fund that helps them. So that is why they have medicine for the people with AIDS.

Interview money saving group (CPR): 14, March, 15 was the last day of our trip. We went to the place that had the money saving group. We went to interview some people there and we taught them about health. I learned: one woman who joined the saving group said that before her family joined the saving group her family was very poor and didn’t have money left. But when she joined the saving group her family had a lot of money left and her family became better. One more is one share equals 5,000R, and before it was 3,000R. In that trip one thing that I liked was playing football with the kids and watching how money saving groups work.

Tech Support Description

Exploration Name: Tech Support
Exploration Dates: November 24th to February 6th
Essential Questions:
a) How can we use technology to improve our learning and help others learn?
Number of Students: 12

Our Exploration was about technology and we made a group called Tech-U-UP. We made this group in Singapore and we made this group for helping NGOs that have problems with their technology. We started our Exploration for a second time because we had a lot of work to do. The first Exploration we had a lot of things to do, for example, fixing Tiny Toones computers and helping Green Umbrella with their website and so on. Tech U-Up has helped a lot of NGOs in Cambodia and mostly we helped Tiny Toones. Tiny Toones had a problem with their computers. Then they gave us the broken computers for us to fix. We took a long time to fix it. When we fixed the computers we didn’t have enough materials. So QB had broken computers and they gave them to us. At that time we took QB’s computers apart. Then took those parts to fix Tiny Toones computers. Then we gave them back all the computers and we taught them how to use computers too. We did not just help Tiny Toones only, we also helped Green Umbrella with their website and taught the kids how the computer works. In this class we had our own expertise, and my expertise was Arduino. Arduino is an object that controls all electric things. Example: it controls the LED lights, motors and so on. In this Exploration my favorite lesson was making a computer by our own group. I believe that technology can improve our learning because technology is global and has a lot of information. If we don’t have technology we can improve our learning too, but our learning is very slow. Example: If we don’t know the word system mean, we can check the dictionary in the book. So it take long time to find that word means, but if we just search in dictionary in computer. It will come up very fast. So that how technology can improve our learning very fast.

Our Exploration is about technology and we have made a group call Tech-U-UP. We have been helping a lot of NGOs in Cambodia and mostly we help Tiny Toones. We started our Exploration for a second time because we had a lot of work to do. The first time we had a lot of things to do, for example fixing tiny toones computer and helping Green umbrella website and so on.

Sharation: At the Sharation my highlight was sharing an idea that I had with other people. I liked people that asked me a lot of questions. When I presented to Trevor, he asked us some questions: “What temperature does each computer need?” and “How many CPUs does each computer have?”. Vuthy, Sophat, Meng Huoth and I didn’t know the answer so we didn’t say anything because we didn’t want to give a wrong answer to other people.

Expertise Windows 8.1: In this Exploration I wanted to learn about Windows 8.1. Now my goal was achieved with Kimseng. Now I still learn about it a little bit and I want to learn more about updates from Windows to another OS, how to fix the printer and so on. Then Kimseng and I can help them about all those problems. I know about Windows 8.1 so I will teach Liger students by writing a document then sharing with them. If some students have a problem and if they want to learn they also can learn from me and Kimseng. I have been solving problems about Windows 8.1 like losing the mouse, hearing annoying sounds when restarting and so on.

Trip to Singapore: We went to Singapore because we wanted to go to UWCSEA. The full name of UWCES is United World Colleges South East Asia. We went to learn about computers and make more friends; we also made a group that helps Cambodian NGOs. When we arrived at UWCSEA we ate lunch there with Jeff. Then we started to walk around UWCSEA. After we walked around UWCSEA we went to eat dinner at the food court. Then we came to UWCSEA to watch a movie named Puss in Boots until 9:00pm. Then we went to sleep with our friend’s family and my friend named Saransh. Saransh’s family was so kind and they said if I’m hungry I can take food from the refrigerator. Every day they gave us food to eat and took us to school with Saransh. We only had two days to live with them and the last day, me, Kimseng and Saransh’s family went out for dinner. Then me and Kimseng gave them a thank you gift and in the morning we ate breakfast, then we went to school. When we were at school we played Minecraft with UWCSEA students and we had fun together. After that we were learning about computers and we were breaking computers to look inside them. Then we ate pizza together. After that we camped in UWCSEA school. Then I played football with Liger students. In this trip I knew three people’s names: Saranch, David and Justin.

Arduino: My expertise is about Arduino. Arduino is an object that makes other things work. For example: LED lights, motors, colored LED lights and so on. If we just take a battery and connect it with a motor then the motor will work. To do that is very simple and easy, but Arduino can do that too. Did you know that the special point about Arduino is we can control it by programming it in our computer? You can make the motor work using the battery and can choose to program it or not. I chose this expertise because I love programming things and making something new. I made the sound work, made the LED lights work and also made the LED colors work too. I used Ardublock to program it and it is easy because I didn’t needed to learn the language of Arduino. Working with Arduino made me feel a little bit faint because the letters are very, very small and it is difficult to see. I consulted with Max to make this Arduino work. I love to play with Arduino and program it, even if it is very hard, I still love it.

Man of the Future

Man of the Future

I am a child

I am all the things of my past

I am the hands of my father

     Long and thin

I am the hairy legs of my mother.

I am all I see

     The Colorful feathers of chickens

The angry and sad face of the dog

A hornbill flying in the sky

And the furry , white body of a goat.

I am all I hear

     Tock tock of the rain

The broom broom of the thunder

And the quack quack of my duck.

Ping ping- time for monks to eat lunch.

I am all I feel and taste

     Sweet juice of the watermelon

     Cold and melting ice-cream

The sour, bitterness of the june plum

     And sweet of the apples.

And all I remember

My mom telling me don’t play boom

My friends losing a football game

     Writing notes with Jo.

I am all I have been taught

     Speak loudly when presenting

     Help other people

     And have determination.

I am all I think

     Becoming a zoologist

And changing Cambodia and the world

     Helping poor people.

I am all those things.

I am like a hornbill

And these things are my egg

But one day I will peck my way out

     And be free

     Because

I’m the man of the future.

Chapter 8: Night of the Ninja

Name: Visal

Date: 27/1/15

1. How do Jack and Annie use the advice from the ninja master? Does it work?

They try to be nature and follow the nature using advice from the ninja master. They use that advice to work for them and not to work for them. Example: Jack tries to be a rock and it works, but when he tries to be like a ninja that wants to walk across the stream it doesn’t work.

2. On page 50, what are the two problems that Jack and Annie have?

On page 50 the problem is they can’t see the tree house and they can’t cross the stream because the water is crushing and rushing. so they can’t walk across.

3. On page 51, it says “the current knocked him over.” What does that mean?

The current knocked him over means the wave and the big water knocked on Jack and made him nearly froze and nearly drowned.

4. Why do they decide to follow Peanut? Is it a good idea? Why or why not?

They decide to follow Peanut because the ninja master said follow nature. This idea is very good because some people that never have been to the forest don’t know what way that they can go, but the animal lives in the forest so they can show the way.

Weekly Journal about Big holiday

When I went home I saw a lot of trees and living things. On the van I played computer and watched the movie a little bit. When I was at home I played football with my friends and when I played football I had to put money. Every time that I played football I wrote the score into my computer like this scores 16/7/14: 5 – 4 , 21.6.14 = 1 – 2. Other then that I went to my old school and I played basketball with my friends so we had fun together. On another day I went to the market and helped my mom to sell. When I went to the market my bike was broken so I had to fix it. On Sunday I went to the lake with my father, brother and my uncle. We drove a moto to the lake for 2 Km from my home and the temperature was hot. When we arrived there we saw leeches but we got the fish. One hour later the temperature was little bit cold. Then the rain was coming. When I was at home I learned English about grammar. Then I came to Liger and I was little bit sad because I couldn’t go to fish again. But when I came to Liger I was a little bit happy too because I can meet my friends and learn with them.

Khmer Architecture Description

]Exploration Name: Khmer Architecture

Exploration Date: November 20-January 17

Number of students: 12

Essential Questions/areas:

(1) What is the meaning of architecture?

(2) What information should I know about architecture?

(3) What does Khmer architecture look like?

(4) What are the differences between ancient and modern architecture?

(5) How do we create architecture?

Description: Architecture is the process of planning, designing and constructing. When we work on architecture with these three things we have to think about durability, utility and beauty. So in our Exploration we learned about architecture in Cambodia. For example: in Cambodia there are many houses, buildings and also the temples. The Khmer architecture was different than the other countries because like the Angkor Wat is made from the big rocks and the foundation that they built is layers of rocks and sand. But in the other countries, like in the U.S.A, there are not really the buildings that have the foundation like that. Before, the buildings in Cambodia were not that big. The houses were also not that big and were not made from cement like right now. Now when they make the houses, they put many colors and many styles that they want. But at the past, the Khmer buildings were not too big and did not have many styles like now. Just the temples had many styles that Khmer ancestors made by hand with the big rocks. On the big rocks they made the big sculptures that showed about Khmer history. To do the architecture we have to follow the theory of architecture and do it step by step. In this group we went on the trip to Siem Reap to learn how did the Khmer ancestors build the temples. Other than that we also went to some places in Phnom Penh. We went to Central Market, Olympic Stadium and PPIT. That is the school that teaches about the architecture.

Moth Essay

Moths-Visal

Moths are insects. They like to fly at night and some fly in the morning too. They have two wings , six legs and a lot of colors round their wings and they are related to the butterflies. Their antennas are different to butterflies antennas. Moth antennas don’t have the knob. But the butterflies antennas have the knob. The moth sleep with open wings. When they land on somethings they use their feet to taste. Butterflies and moths start life the same way. Their both have a lot of predators like to eat them.

Larva life: Moths start as an egg. Then the egg become to the caterpillar it take around 15-16 days. The caterpillars come to the pupa. so the pupa become to the moth. They are near the bottom of food web. One kind of the caterpillars look like the predators. One kind of caterpillars do like the super snack because they want to make the predators skare. When the caterpillars stingus us it hurt for 20 minutes. Fiercest Caterpillar call Puss moth spots on front look big black eyes. The caterpillars is the Champion of eating. A lot of caterpillars eats plants and leaves. But some kind of this caterpillars are eating the meat. When skin of the caterpillars are get too tight it take the old skin out. Then new skin coming and the caterpillars they eating more.

Transformers: When the caterpillars take out of their skin from 4-5 times it molt for last time then it going to be pupa. When caterpillars become to pupa it not eating any things. After that the pupa start to open then the moth come out. The bat like to fly at night and the moths like to fly at night too so when the bat see the moths they eat the moths. But some moths are so smart they fly zigzags to make the bat they hart to eat them. Some moths heard the sound of the bat when they come to eat them. One more kind of them just stand on land when the bat come to eat. They take out the bad smell for the bat can’t not eat.

Camouflage: This insects so smart they use camouflage to hide from predators and make them skair. The camouflages of moths was open wing into blend of trees bark or rock. Some camouflage make moth looks like the stinging bees.

Biography Description

Exploration Name: Biography(Jo)
Exploration Dates: August 12-September 26
Essential Questions:
(1) What is a biography?
(2) What events have shaped this person’s life?
Number of Students: 13

Description: The first day that we started to learn our Exploration everyone was very excited. Our Exploration studied with teacher Jo, Sambath and Channa. Our Exploration learned about  Biography. Biography is studying about the other person’s life. Biography group worked  together and shared ideas that we had. For example: we went on a trip and searched the  information in computer. When we interviewed we used the strategy to understand about the  other person’s life like listening strategy, asking questions and interviewing. We learned how to  interview the people, by writing down the notes, how to be a good photographer and a good questionnaire. When we interviewed the people already we not just write down notes in our book. We also learned to make a documentary in the iMovie program. Some people worked on the information that  they got too but they did it in Powerpoint program. The reason we wanted to do like this  because in the future if we forget what we have we can look in the documentary of the other  people life. The people that we interviewed were:Sophal’s uncle (the older person and now he  does not do anything because his leg is hurt), Sophal’s sister-in-law (now she not do anything  but she works at her house), Sophal  (works in Liger cleaning the school), Simian (works in  Liger cleaning the school) and Houy (also works at cleaning Liger too). We had many different  people that we interviewed but we only give example some of the people. We took the trip to  go to the pagoda near our school to interview the monks in that pagoda. It was so fun for the Biography group. Our group studied only six weeks. Every day during Exploration time the students worked hard and studied new things a lot. In this Exploration all of the students are not lazy, they are active and helpful. We all were really happy to study about biography and now help us have a knowledge and a lot of the experience that we thought.
